Phnom Da: a must-see historical site in Takeo
Located in Takeo Province, southern Cambodia, Phnom Da Temple is one of the oldest pre-Angkorian monuments in the country. Built in the 6th century during the reign of King Rudravarman , it is a unique testimony to the art and architecture of the Funan Kingdom.
Unlike the famous temples of Angkor, Phnom Da is less frequented by tourists, making it an ideal visit for those who wish to experience a more authentic and peaceful Cambodia.
The History of Phnom Da Temple
Phnom Da, which literally means “Black Mountain,” stands on a natural hill overlooking the surrounding plain. The sanctuary was built of brick and sandstone, with a sober but solid architecture, representative of the pre-Angkorian period.
Around the site, several caves house stone statues and sculptures, some of which depict the four-armed Vishnu and other Hindu deities. These works provide insight into the importance of Hinduism in ancient Cambodia, before the rise of Buddhism.
What to see in Phnom Da?
The main sanctuary : a brick tower erected on top of the hill.
The surrounding caves : home to statues and sculptures of great historical value.
The panoramic view : from the summit, a splendid view of the Takeo countryside and the Bassac River.

How to visit Phnom Da?
The temple is accessible from Phnom Penh (about 70 km away) or Takeo town. The journey is by car, but the river route is also very popular: a boat trip on the canals and rivers leading to Phnom Da offers an immersion in rural Cambodian life.
